Thomson was once home to the plantations, ponds, and farms tended by many Hainanese settlers in the 1960s. Today, remnants of the quiet rural enclave, shaped by the rhythms of agriculture still exists just a stone’s throw from our Upper Thomson café—traces of footpaths, old foundations, and long-forgotten plots now intertwined with the unrestrained landscape of Thomson Nature Park.

Plain Vanilla at Upper Thomson draws from this unique landscape and brings it back to the street. The design reinterprets the terrain of old Thomson, with gentle contours and layered forms that rise to form counters, tables, and seats. These sculpted elements echo the gradients of the former plantations and the soft slopes of the ponds and farms that once defined the land.

As you follow the gentle curves into our café, the space invites you to slow down and settle under our canopy of diffused light. Here, the past and present meet quietly, offering a moment of calm rooted in the layered ground on which Thomson’s stories were first written.
